Moral values obligations-Significance

Without commonly shared and widely entrenched moral values and obligations, neither the law, nor democratic government, nor even the market economy will function properly. What do you understand by this statement? Explain with illustration in the contemporary times. (150 Words, 10)

For proper working of any system certain principles are necessary, we need to follow them. Some times in spite of those principles if we don’t follow moral principles that system doesn’t work properly. In the recent time if we take examples , The governments are bringing progressive legislation but when it comes to its implementation they are not following their own principles. What you firmly belief ,it must reflect in your action that is is your moral responsibility. When public representatives moving away from their moral responsibilities and values then democracy will fall into danger. People will loose faith over system . Even in legal system, though we are following many legal principles, if we forget moral values and responsibilities like justice to all , equality before the law , justice delayed justice denied , impartiality, no favoritism then people will lose faith in the system , that erode the credibility. Even in case of market economy even if we follow sound bussiness principles , it maynot give good results unless if we follow ethical principles. Fro example take the case of Satyam Ramalingaraju case , though it was one of the emerging software firm because lack moral values they diverted shareholders money for other projects and inflated the profits. Here they cheated the investors so public lost faith in that firm finally it got collapsed. Even in case of NPAs in Indian banks , some of were because of unethical practices of bank employees, that resulted into the present day situation.)
It is said that without social reforms political reforms are not possible. This line supports the points that without a society with moral values and obligations neither the law, nor democratic government, nor even the market economy can function properly. As moral beliefs and values provide foundation to any ethical law, government and economy.
Moral Values and Law Law cannot touch all the elements of social life and it comes into play when the act has been done but moral values teach us how to respect the law and it develops internal sanctions against an unethical act. For example, the crime against women is still increasing despite having many laws against it because their is an absence of value of equality and presence of male supremacy in the society.
Moral Values and Democratic Government If their is an absence of moral values in the society and people, then the democratic government will have to face issues like defections, money and muscle power in elections, hate speeches, divisions on the lines of religion and caste. It can also result in transformation of a democratic government in a tyrannical one which commits atrocities against its own people.
Moral Values and Market Economy Without moral values and obligations, market economy cannot work in a sustainable way, as the crisis like global depression, Eurozone crisis, various scams, poor corporate governance, environment unfriendly practices of companies, the penchant for greed etc are occurring only because of lack of moral values.
These examples are in contradiction to Gandhian ideology of commerce without morality and politics without principles are sins.
