The important salient features of the 1858 Act were:
  • The transfer of power from the company to crown. The administration of British was to be carried on by the Secretary of State and Governor-General.

  • Official majority was maintained in the Central Legislative Council.

  • The Act of 1858 was passed taking into consideration the massive revolt of 1857. The British Government now focused more on consolidation than expansion. The act of 1909 attempted to create a divide between Hindu and Muslim communities, and weaken their combined power.
