QN 1(e) Gramsci’s concept of Hegemony

Hegemony is the process of manufacturing consent at various levels of socialization (in the superstructures-media, school, association, etc). Hegemony denotes the ideological domination of the ruling class.
When the Marxist prediction that capitalism would die its own death failed to materialize. Gramci analyzed the reason for it. He concluded that the superstructures had acquired a life of their own and were aiding in the perpetuation of capitalism.

He understood the importance of civil society in propagation of ideas. Individuals got indoctrinated during socialisation by intercations in a subtle manner in daily activities.
He blamed the church, education and social life for giving an aura of naturalness to capitailism. It projected capitalism as the natural and provided it with legitimacy.
He has lamented that communism can’t be ushered in unless it becomes hegemonic  idea. He suggested the creation of counter hegemony by intellectuals of the working class. He has called for an alliance of organic class.
Gramsian observations are very relevant in today's modern world where fake news and post-truth have become the norm. It is important to develop a critical and enquiring mind.
