Q.19 Enumerate the problems and prospects of inland water transport in India.(CSE Mains 2016)GS-I 2016 

India's inland water transport systems compare poorly in comparison with other countries. The sector has been plagued with the following problems
  • Lack of infrastructure
  • Less ships and boats are available
  • Reduced water flow in many streams since they are monsoon dependent
  • LAX regulation and  bureaucratic hurdles
  • Attitudinal bias in favour of road and Railways
  • Lack of proactive initiates from government
Despite the drawbacks there are significant aspects of development which can give a boost to Inland water transport in India.

Inland water transport policy 2001 gives a fresh impetus to inland water Transport authority the statutory organisation responsible for the Sector. The government has recognised National waterways as areas of focus. Some benefits from the development of waterways are:
  • Reduction of stress from road and rail transport network.
  • Increased regional connectivity especially in North East.
  • Increased employment and livelihood opportunities.
  • Decreased cost for freight movement.
  • Huge potential for growth of shipping industry and ancillary services.
  • Increased exports improved logistics can decrease transportation cost and make our exports more competitive.
  • Environment friendly-Decreased pollution in comparison to rail and Road networks.
