India is a democracy. The success of a democracy depends upon Civic participation. Post independence India adopted democratic socialism as its  economic agenda. Democracy has always been held important by Indians. It allows people participation at various levels- National, State and local.

Indian welfare state model has evolved form of patronising state to rights based framework. Eg. MGNREGA, RTE, RTI, NFSA, etc. These legislative measures seek to empower the citizens and make them active participants in governance.

The enactment of 73rd and 74th constitutional amendment act has provided for increased people participation. These initiatives can be made successful only when he doesn't become active and aware participants.

In India the hierarchical societal structure have hindered people participation in some regions. Some programs where the effectiveness of government has increased due to people participation are listed below,

• The effectiveness of social audit in Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) has eradicated ghost beneficiaries and enhanced accountability . This has been able the act to be hailed as a successful anti poverty measure. The success of the actors mainly attributed to increase awareness and people participation.
• The involvement of mothers to inspect mid-day meal scheme food at schools in Madhya Pradesh has bought at qualitative improvement in them. Activists have called for the expansion of such social inspection methods nationwide.
• Recently Public Service Commissions have started an initiative of getting candidates to verify the sales of question booklet and authenticate them to increase transparency in recruitment process.
• The active participation of citizens in the delivery of public distribution system has enabled the effective implementation of national food security act(NFSA).
• Environmentalists have stressed that people participation is the only way to guarantee is sustainable environmental protection model. The local community a pivotal role in environmental protection.

People participation in governance system has not only increase the effectiveness of government at various levels but also increase the level of transparency and accountability. They have been effective in eradicating poverty and enhancing the Service Delivery mechanism thereby raising the standard of living of millions.
