Spirit of tolerance and love in Indian society

The spirit of tolerance and love is not only an interesting feature of Indian society from the very early times, but it is also playing an important role part at the present. Elaborate.
India has been well renowned for its pluralistic tradition. Numerous cultures, ideologies and traditions have not only existed but flourished in India. The spirit of tolerance and love can be witnessed since the early times. In his book “The Argumentative Indian”, Amartya Sen has made a compelling case to highlight the tradition of dissent, discourse and tolerance in India.
The British policy of ‘divide and rule’, which emphasized on the differences among communities, sowed the seeds of tension. Post-independence some segments have used excluvistic ideologies to mobilize people. They have attempted to create a feeling of “US VS THEM”. This has manifested itself in intolerance and hate.
India is plural society with multitudes of culture and tradition. Any attempts to impose uniformity could invariably cause fissures in the society. The foundational stone of “Unity in Diversity” was not just the product of progressive mindset whereas a prudent and pragmatic step taken because of necessity. Some scholars have called India as a “Nation of Nations”. Europe has been balkanized on the basis of factors far insignificant in comparison to Indian states.
Therefore tolerance and love has to play an important role in the present as well as future in order to preserve the idea and spirit of India.
