Characteristics of the monsoon climate

What characteristics can be assigned to the monsoon climate that succeeds in feeding more than 50 percent of the world population residing in South Asia?
    Monsoon refers to the seasonal reversal of winds in the topical belt. Principal regions influenced by monsoon are
  • South Asia (180° reversal of winds)
  • East Asia.
  • Northern Australia and
  • Western Africa
The main characteristics that can be assigned to the monsoon climate are
  • Seasonal reversal of winds.
  • Two dry seasons and one wet spell.
  • Cold and dry winter (November to February)
  • Hot and humid summer (March to May)
  • Wet and rainy season (June to October)
  • Seasonal distribution of rainfall.
  • Temporal and spatial variation in the amount of precipitation. There is variation in the frequency, intensity and duration in monsoon. This causes floods in one place and at the same time draught in another region.
  • High humidity.
  • High annual temperature.
  • Irregular onset and retreat.
  • Impact of tele-connections such as EC Nino and La Nina. El Nino is said to be negatively correlated with the summer monsoon in South Asia, whereas La Nina is said to be positively correlated.
