Distinguish between the following four literary awards.

Jnanpith Award (ii) Sahitya Akademi Award
(iii) Vyas Samman (iv) Saraswati Samman

 (i) Jnanpith Award:
         This is the most prestigious and highest literary award, given for the best creative literary writing by any Indian citizen in any of the languages included in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

         The award was instituted in 1961, is the brainchild of late Smt Rama Jain, the first President of Bharatiya Jnanpith. In 1965, the Malayalam writer G Sankar Kurup was its first recipient. This award carries a cash award of Rs. 5 lakh.

         Since 1982, this award is being given for the lifetime contribution of the writer. Prior to that, the award was given for a single work.


Sahitya Akademi Award:
         This is the second highest literary honour conferred by the Government of India, through Sahitya Akademi, India's National Akademi of Letters, to writers of outstanding works in any one of the 24 major Indian languages including English language.

         Instituted in 1954, the award comprises a plaque and a cash prize of ' 1 lakh (revised in 2009 from Z 50,000). The award's purpose is to recognise and promote excellence in Indian writing and to acknowledge new trends.


Vyas Samman:
          It is a literary award, annually conferred by KK Birla Foundation. The award was instituted in 1991. It carries a cash prize of Rs. 2.5 lakh.

          This award is conferred on the best creative literary work in Hindi language only which has been published in last 12 years.


Saraswati Samman:
          The award was instituted in 1991 by KK Birla Foundation and is named after Indian Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess of learning.

          This is the highest literary award for outstanding prose or poetry in any Indian language that is included in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution and has been published in the previous ten years.

This is decided by a panel of scholars and former award winners. It carries a cash prize of Rs.5 lakh
