Evaluate the contribution of revolutionary terrorism represented by Bhagat Singh to the cause of India's struggle for independence.
The Doctrine of non-violence by Gandhi proved difficult for the youth to follow. They looked and resorted to the alternative means to attain freedom.
The youth separated from the Congress and looked for other choices. Needless to say, violence was the most preferred option used by them.
Bhagat Singh played leadership role in this regard. Under his leadership in 1928. the Hindustan Republican Socialist Association was established. It led to a series of violent acts like the murder of Saunders and assembly bombing.
The revolutionaries played a significant role in the freedom struggle in their own different way.
- It provided opportunity for the youth to contribute, when there was no mass movement.
- It inspired masses with their heroics, especially the student section, who now joined the freedom struggle.
- It created fear among the British administration, and proved the fact that British empire was not invincible.
- It helped Indians to regain their pride and self respect.
- The revolutionaries never believed in violence as an end itself, but used it very tactically to propagate their ideas. It was initiated through journals, newspapers and books. The periodicals like Tugantar', `Kesari', 'Bharat Mata' did excellent work in spreading revolutionary ideas. The organisations working on the unity of the people and social reforms, received tremendous boost.
- The movement failed to attain its goal due to the following reasons
- It could not reach out to the peasants and workers at the ground level, thus it was devoid of popular support.
- Lack of coordination and communication led to failed attempts.
- British government successfully suppressed the uprising through various acts.
- Muslims kept themselves away from such movements.
- Even in its failure, the movement fulfilled people with courage and determination
