Smart villages for Smart cities

19. Smart cities cannot sustain without smart villages. Discuss the statement in the backdrop of rural – urban integration.
Smart cites mission aims to develop 100 cites in a citizen friendly and sustainable manner by leveraging Information Communication Technology (ICT) to provide smart solutions to urban challenges. Though cities are the engines of economic growth, they are powered by fuel from the village. Villages provide the backend support by providing for the needs of city life. They supply raw materials to the city and also meet the demands for agro products. So there is a pressing need for smart villages to support the smart cities mission. A mutual relationship can be beneficial to both.
India had launched PURA (Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas ) to provide for Holistic development in Rural regions . The mission aimed to provide educational, health care and employment in rural regions. The National Rurban Mission has taken forward the plan to develop a cluster of village in a sustainable manner to stimulate local economic development and enhance basic services. Smart villages initiative has aimed to develop village on the Gandhian modal of Aadarsh village, which are self reliant and self sufficient. Adarsh Gram Yojana has been launched in addition to the smart cities and Digital India as a development Program for India. It’s vision in an integrated village development plan, encompassing personal, human, social and economic dimensions.
The smart village and smart cities mission can complement one another and act as a model for co-operative sustainable relationship. The Village can provide for the needs of the cities and vice versa. Such rural-urban integration is a prerequisite for successful development of the Smart cites.
