Mesolithic rock cut architecture reflects aesthetic sense

Mesolithic rock cut architecture of India not only reflects the cultural life of the times but also a fine aesthetic sense comparable to modern painting. Critically evaluate this comment.

Stone age is classified into Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic ages. The Mesolithic age saw the beginning of domestication of animals and development of small fine tools such as chipped stones and carved bones. The period was a glorious chapter for rock cut architecture. The rock paintings were well developed and refined . This is indicative that initial progress that ought to have been made in the upper Paleolithic ages.

These paintings include humans, Natural scenes, Animals, etc. The painting represent human social activities such as child rearing , festive celebrations , Hunting, burial ceremony , etc. . This represents that communal and social life had matured and individuals were able to appreciate and realize the essence of these gatherings. This reflects the cultural life of these times.

The depiction of nature and the surroundings around that of man indicates the aesthetic sense of these paintings. Similar level of asthetic representation could be witnessed in modern art paintings. Fine arts seem to have come naturally to humans. Mesolithic Paintings were first discovered in 1867 by Carlyle in Mirzapur. Later, they have been found throughout Indian with Bhimbetka harboring the maximum sites.

  1. The Mesolithic era is one of the most interesting era as things started to innovate as compare to the Paleolithic era ,the painting resembles the fine nature of aesthetic and the rock cut tools and materials were finely crafted, one of the most important Rock cut architecture of Mesolithic era are the cave paintings were not only cultural life but also Hunting &
Gathering, men & women , animals ,sexual activity etc are drawn at Mesolithic caves such as Bhimbedka(MP) which could have been drawn base on the painters life experience and feelings and When we compare it with the modern painters the trend of painting base on their experience or feelings can be hardly seen as mordern painters mostly the pictures without any meanings where as the painters of Mesolithic period use to so I can say that the were having fine aesthetic sence as comparable to mordern paintings.
