The term ‘Domestic Content Requirement’ is sometimes seen in the news with reference to
(a) Developing solar power production in our country
(b) Granting licences to foreign T.V. channels in our country
(c) Exporting our food products to other countries
(d) Permitting foreign educational institutions to set up their campuses in our country
Justification: India’s Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) favours Indian manufacturers of solar panels in government procurement. This is referred as Domestic Content Requirement.
US dragged India to WTO alleging that Indian preference for domestic manufacturers discriminates against foreign suppliers.
The WTO’s Appellate Body had declared domestic content requirement (DCRs) in JNNSM as illegal.
