Challenges with growth of IT hubs

“The growth of cities as IT hubs have opened up new avenues of employment, but has also created new problems” Substantiate this statement with examples.
India by enjoying an advantage of skilled and low-cost workforce has become the IT Hub of the world. It has become the global destination of IT services. This has opened up numerous avenues for employment, growth and income generation. It has also indirectly contributed to growth of numerous other sectors. However, it has also led to new problems. Some challenges faced by IT hubs are:-
  • Infrastructural issues
  • Hack of adequate public transport
  • Increased reliance on private transport
  • Increased pollution, carbon footprint
  • Incoherent planning and ad hoc solution
  • Rapid urban crawl
  • Contributes to increasing social tension
  • Issues regarding safety and security of women
  • Loss of green cover
IT hubs such as Bangalore, Hyderabad , Sholinganalur, Gurugram have faced similar issues. Rapid development had increased demand for housing and resulted in urban sprawl. Recent reports brought out the loss of green cover in Bangalore and the increased levels of pollution in the city.
IT Hubs function by talent pooling. This results in increased migration and affects the local demography. At times, it creates an atmosphere of ‘us v/s them’ and contributes to social tension. Also issues pertaining to the security and safety of women have risen. Ad-hoc solutions and lack of holistic vision have resulted in temporary Band-Aid solutions to most of the issues. Well planned and organized development can negate a lot of these ‘new problems’.
