How does the Juno Mission of NASA help to understand the origin and evolution of the Earth?
Juno is an orbiter mission which will study the atmosphere, core, and magnetic field of Jupiter. Juno will specifically try to determine
- Atmospheric composition of ammonia and water.
- Map the core of Jupiter and determine the deep structure of the planet.
- Explore and study the planets magnetosphere near the poles, especially the auroras.
- Observe Jupiter’s gravitational fields.
Jupiter is a gaseous giant composed mainly of Hydrogen and helium. Scientists believe that this ‘mini solar system’ has not undergone changes to the extent to which the smaller planets have changed.
Hence, they believe that by studying Jupiter we can get a better understanding of our solar system’s history and composition.
By estimating the amount of water in Jupiter’s atmosphere, we can determine which planet formation theory is correct.
